Olive Growing on the Garda Lake

Olive growing on Lake Garda developed in the Middle Ages, although there is no lack of evidence of the presence of the olive tree in even more ancient times.
Olive pits dating back to the last period of the Republican Rome were found in the pile dwelling area of Bor, near Pacengo. On the other hand, in Malcesine, a crusher stone equipped with the typical side flutes for the collection of oil was also found. It was accompanied by coins that refer to Emperor Maxentius' time (early 4th century BC). The oldest documents on oil mills and olive groves date back to the VIII century. Even before being used for food purposes, olive oil's production was probably destined for liturgical uses: the oil was in fact used to administer the sacraments and to light the lamps in church tabernacles.
